How to Prepare for Gun Camp
We encourage every gun owner to seek out professional training, not just one time, but often. Many of you may be traveling to a professional shooting school or gun camp.
Before You Go
You should consider more than just the firearm(s) and ammunition you are going to take with you.
- Step number one; go to the shooting school’s website and look up their recommended gear list.
- Step number two; actually read the gear list.
It is important to follow the advice of the people who train others FOR A LIVING. They have a great deal of experience.
If the gear list says to bring a minimum of three (3) magazines for your pistol, don’t try to shortcut the process by taking only two.
The same goes for ammunition requirements. You will feel foolish running out of ammo halfway through the second day of training.
Not Just About Hardware
Men like to focus on their hardware; guns, ammunition, holsters, etc.
That is fine, but you need more than a gun and ammo to successfully complete a professional firearms training course.
Some very simple items; such as sunscreen, insect repellant, and lip balm will make your time outdoors on the range more pleasant.
Consider the clothing and footwear you will be taking with you to the school. Most every shooting school will require you to spend a good amount of time on your feet.
Take a MINIMUM of two (2) quality pairs of footwear and quality cushioned socks as well.
As for clothing, be sure your trousers are loose fitting and will allow you to squat, kneel, and bend with ease. Quality kneepads may be a great item to include.
Be prepared to dress in layers. Cool mornings on the range can quickly give way to hot afternoons.
Most every shooting school is going to operate rain or shine. Be sure to take foul weather gear; a rain suit or a poncho.
Again, this is where having two pair of shoes or boots will come in handy. Wet boots or shoes can be swapped out the following day for a dry pair. Be prepared to protect your hands, make sure to take a good pair of snug fitting gloves.
Those are the basic items you will need to prepare for gun camp. Enjoy!
